Florissant Fossil Beds

On the last weekend of September we took a trip to the Fossil Beds in Florissant, it's about an hour from here.  It was such a beautiful day for a hike.
The story of Florissant is that in the past Colorado had a temperate climate, probably much like California today (so much for global warming).  We had redwood trees and lots of different types of insects in keeping with that type of climate.  Long story short, there was an active volcanic eruption in the area that erupted and covered the area with ash, water, ect. over time this stuff broke down and fossilized a snapshot in time. When the government gets their act together, you can look up the park information on the National Parks website, it is really cool!

A grove of aspen trees probably a week or so before the golden color of peak leaf viewing.
Pine trees and a little dry stream bed.
My boys. You can't tell it from the look on his face but Jordan loves to hike.
A close-up of a fossil found near the place we ate our picnic lunch.
I don't know if you can see it well or not but this is a Steller's Jay that thought it would like a piece of our lunch.  It was a noisy thing!
 A fossilized redwood stump.
This is me with my friend Lynette.
 Mark and I.
 A family picture.
This is Mark and Lynette's husband Dan.
The boys should all have a picture together too.
 Lynette and Dan.
Jordan thought he would pose for me.  I need to work on the smiling thing, he either looks like he isn't having a good time or he has a Grinch smile.
 Dan taking pictures.
 More fossils.
This is a picture of the Hornbek homestead. The building you see in the foreground is the only original building at the site.  There are other buildings but they have been brought in from other sites in the area.
 Mark.
I was trying to get a cool kind of artistic picture of one of the buildings.  I actually like this one but I accidentally deleted the original of this photo.
Mark took this one, I really like it.

So much beauty and interest in God's handiwork!
