Leah and I have been having some conversations about gratitude, just being thankful for what you have, and it has made me more aware of the issue on a much broader scale. We as individuals, families, and a nation are loosing our perspective. Most of us have little idea of what it is like to be truly destitute.
A little fresh perspective is a healthy thing: I just finished reading a book on the Dust Bowl which hit right around the time of the Great Depression. The people who lived in the area of the Dust Bowl were truly destitute. They lost their livelhood, their ability to grow their food, feed their families or their livestock. A little side note, they were so hungry they were eating pickled tumbleweed. Many died from something called dust pneumonia, the air was so full of dust breathing was litterally unhealthy. Many of them lost their land because they couldn't make a living off of it. Life was in short...miserable.
Now, tightening our belts a little doesn't seem so bad does it?
